Contemplative Deer

28x36 Acrylic on Stretched Canvas in Ornate Gold Frame (frame not shown)

Many wildlife depictions of deer focus on the “Big Buck” with glorious racks. The artist purposefully wanted to depict a deer that could be either male or female. This stately deer is glorious in its own right as it gracefully stops to peer while standing in dark waters. The deer is so quiet and still, not a ripple can be seen in the water. Almost more spirit than body, the softness of the deer contrasts with the dark strength of the oak grove. The word and meaning of “contemplative” was foreign to the artist until he had a providential meeting with nuns of the Order of Dominican Contemplative Sisters in Lockport, Louisiana. Realizing the need to be still and quiet while waiting on God’s inspirations came as a great solace to the artist. During his whole life, the artist thought deeply into things and the truths of life. While this “gift” wasn't always recognized as so, the realization that the gift was simply a natural and continual invitation to listen and watch for the beauty and goodness of God changed the artist‘s life. Sitting in the beauty, calm and quiet of nature breathes life into all creatures, including this contemplative deer.

“Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.”

“Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face.
Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”

1 Corinthians 13:11-13
